Blogging can be an inspiring way for you, as a Baby Boomer, to share your stories, discover new purpose, and connect with people across the globe. But let’s be honest—it’s not always a gentle ascent. There are plenty of painful pitfalls that can make starting up tricky. This guide will help you avoid common mistakes so you can confidently immerse yourself in blogging and let your stories echo across the globe!

Point 1.

Maybe you think blogging is a gig for the younger crowd, but I’m here to tell you that starting a blog at 65-plus can fill your cup—and maybe even spill a drop of inspiration onto the saucer.

It’s a way to let your creative self out of the box, share your passion, and perhaps even rediscover purpose in life. Blogging opens many unexpected doors, offering an empowering outlet for everyone—including those with disabilities. It provides a way to connect, engage, and express yourself, regardless of physical limitations.

I’m no seasoned expert—in fact, I’ve made my fair share of mistakes—but what’s kept me going is the prospect of learning something new and connecting with others who share my interests.

Blogging has given me a sense of purpose that I didn’t expect. It’s helping me figure out what the heck I want to do in this unpredictable chapter of life.

Whether you’re looking to find your voice, share your experiences, or leap into something fresh and exciting, blogging can be the spark you didn’t know you needed.

Let’s get back to blogging as we should instead of selling our souls for six figures! Not that I’m against six figures, I’m just sayin’…

So, if you’ve ever thought about starting a blog but weren’t sure where to begin—or felt it was too overwhelming—I’m here to help you sidestep some common pitfalls and make the process smoother. If I can do it, you absolutely can too!

Point 2.

Starting a blog was like hiking the Great Smokey Mountains—plenty of twists and turns along the way! I’ve had to swerve quite a few times, and there were things I wish I’d known from the start. In this post, I’ll share those lessons to help keep your blogging path a little less steep and curvy.

Whether it’s avoiding the technical headaches, picking the right tools, or simply getting out of your own way, my goal is to help you skip the most common pitfalls that new bloggers fall into—especially if you’re overwhelmed by the whole process. So, lace up those hiking boots, and I’ll help you navigate the curves to make starting your blog more effortless and enjoyable—without the stress!

Start a Blog at Any Age

Starting a blog later in life might seem like a bold step, but it can bring an incredible sense of achievement. For many, this stage of life gives us the time and space to reflect on what truly matters—our passions, experiences, and the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

Blogging is your platform to express those reflections, whether you want to share stories, knowledge, or simply the things that bring you peace and satisfaction. It’s your space—no one can tell you what to write. And sometimes, blogging can even be cathartic—a way to get things off your mind and lighten the load.

One of the biggest benefits is finding a renewed sense of purpose. With blogging, you can let your hair down, step outside your box, and stay mentally active. Each post you create will inspire the next. You’ll learn new tools and jump into topics that make your heart flutter, keeping your mind sharp and engaged as we merge into our older years.

Beyond personal satisfaction, blogging allows you to connect with others—whether they’re across the street or the world. You never know who might be inspired or comforted by your words.

And in sharing your life experiences, you can leave a lasting legacy. Your blog becomes a way to pass down insights, humor, and tales that might otherwise remain only a whisper in your mind.

Ultimately, blogging as a senior is about reaching within, touching your spirit, and sharing your story with the world. You’ll build connections, stay curious and sharp, and find a feeling of completion in unexpected ways.

What I Wish I Knew When I Started

When I first stumbled across the idea of blogging, I wasn’t even looking for it—I just happened to land on a site that said something like, “Learn how to start a blog.” Intrigued, I jumped in, followed their instructions, and signed up with Bluehost. But here’s the catch—after I signed up, I was left holding the bag, “What do I do now?”

The short course I followed was designed to get me onto their email list, and little did I know it wouldn’t offer any real guidance beyond “Get a theme and start writing.” Okay, so now I have Bluehost and WordPress installed (automatically because Bluehost handles that part), but I have no clue what to do next. What theme should I use? Why? And how do I even learn how to use it?

Lesson learned: don’t fall into the trap of oversimplified advice. There’s much more to starting a blog than just picking a theme and writing. I wish I’d known back then to dig deeper and look for real guidance on themes, WordPress setup, and—MOST importantly—blog security. After getting infected with malware, I realized how crucial it is to prioritize security from day one. Take the time to install a security plugin, set up strong passwords, and create regular backups. But that wasn’t mentioned in the short “How to Start a Blog” course.

Secure my blog

1. Prioritize Security Early On

One of my biggest regrets was not installing security until it was too late. But I didn’t know! After being infected with malware, I learned the hard way that securing your blog is essential from the start. Installing a security plugin, using strong passwords, and setting up regular backups can save you many headaches.

2. Choosing the Right Theme Is Paramount

I didn’t realize how much a theme impacts your blog’s functionality and look. I initially picked a recommended theme but later found it wasn’t flexible enough for my needs. Switching themes can be a hassle, so take your time choosing one that works for you—especially one that’s responsive and easy to customize.

3. Blogging Takes Time and Patience

It’s easy to think that blogging is a quick way to start earning money or building a following, but that’s not the reality. Don’t expect instant results. Effective blogging requires time and a consistent effort to build momentum.

4. WordPress Can Be Overwhelming at First

WordPress is a powerful platform. But it can feel like a maze when first starting. I spent countless hours learning how to use plugins, customize pages, and figure out the technical side. The main thing is to take your time and start. I made the mistake of tackling it all at once.

To get a hands-on understanding of the WordPress dashboard, I recommend checking out Bluehost’s WordPress Academy. It offers easy-to-follow tutorials that cover everything you need to start managing your blog confidently, and it’s free to enroll.

The Value of Finding Your Niche

My topics were too broad at first, which made it hard to connect with a specific audience. I wish I’d known the importance of narrowing my focus earlier. Finding a niche helps you stay motivated and makes it easier for your readers to know what to expect from your blog. And it makes it easier for you. You can expand your horizons later. Let your readers get to know you first.

Step 1: Step-by-Step Guide to Starting Your Blog

Blue Host Sign Up Page

Choose Your Hosting Provider: I recommend using Bluehost because it’s beginner-friendly, affordable, and reliable. However, keeping your domain registration separate from your hosting service is important. This makes it easier to switch hosts later if needed and ensures better control over your domain.

Sign up with Bluehost for hosting, and WordPress.org will automatically install for you as part of the setup.

Register Your Domain with a Separate Registrar: Instead of using Bluehost to register your domain, I recommend using a registrar like NameCheap. It’s affordable, and keeping your domain registration separate gives you more flexibility.

Go to NameCheap.com, search for your domain name, and purchase it.

Connect Your Domain to Your Hosting: Once you’ve purchased your domain on NameCheap, you’ll need to connect it to your Bluehost hosting. NameCheap provides easy-to-follow instructions on updating your DNS settings to link your domain to Bluehost.

Step 2: Use WordPress.org (Not WordPress.com)

WordPress dashboard

Many beginners are confused about the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com, but here’s why I recommend WordPress.org:

WordPress.org: This is the self-hosted version of WordPress, meaning you’ll have complete control over your website. You can use your domain, choose from thousands of plugins, and have full customization options. With Bluehost, WordPress.org is automatically installed, and you won’t need to worry about managing the technical setup.

WordPress.com: This is the hosted version, and while it’s easier to use, it comes with limitations. You don’t have complete control over customization, plugins, or monetization. For serious bloggers, WordPress.org is the way to go.

Step 3: Installing a Theme in WordPress.org

Log Into WordPress.org: Once Bluehost has installed WordPress.org, log into your dashboard by going to yourdomainname.com/wp-admin.

Access Themes: In your dashboard, go to “Appearance” and “Themes.” Browse or Upload a Theme:

Free Themes: WordPress.org offers a vast library of free themes. Find one that suits your style and the needs of your blog.

Premium Themes: You can purchase a premium theme if you want more customization options or a unique design.

Activate Your Theme: After selecting or uploading a theme, click “activate” to make it live on your site.

Step 4: Securing Your Blog

Why I Recommend SiteLock:

For security, I use SiteLock, which provides comprehensive protection, including malware detection, a firewall, and automated backups. It’s an all-in-one solution, so I prefer it over other options.

Sign up for SiteLock and follow the steps to integrate it with your WordPress.org site.

Budget-Friendly Security Alternatives:

If SiteLock isn’t within your budget, consider using security plugins like Wordfence or Sucuri, which offer free options.

Always use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication for extra protection.

Backups: If you’re not using SiteLock’s backup feature, install a plugin like UpdraftPlus to create regular blog backups.

Note: I’m not an affiliate of SiteLock or Namecheap. These are simply services I use and trust based on my own experience.

Step 5: Why I Use Site Kit Instead of MonsterInsights:

When I first set up Google Analytics, I used MonsterInsights, but I ran into issues with missing tracking codes. After getting some much-needed research, I switched to Site Kit by Google, which handled the setup seamlessly and fixed those issues. Since then, Site Kit has been a more reliable and integrated solution for managing my blog’s analytics—and best of all, it’s completely free!

  • Tip: Site Kit automatically integrates with Google Analytics and Google Search Console, making it easy to track your blog’s performance without the need for manual setup.

Step 6: Avoid Wasting Money as a New Blogger

When you’re just starting out, it’s easy to get caught up in buying expensive plugins, premium themes, and services that promise to make your blog stand out. But the truth is, you don’t need to spend a fortune to get started.

Most Important:

  • Focus on reliable, affordable hosting. I recommend Bluehost.
  • A good (but simple) theme. I recommend Ashe or Astra.
  • Essential security tools. As your blog grows, you can always invest in extras, but in the beginning, save your money and keep things simple. I would not skimp on security.

“I’m Not a Writer—How Can I Blog?”

Maybe you think, “I’m not a writer. How can I start a blog?” I know that feeling—I’m not a professional writer either. But I’m stubborn and like to do it my way.

Blogging can open the box and let you pop out to share your experiences and connect with others. So don’t worry—your writing will improve as you find your voice over time. Perfection is not what you’re after—but telling your story is. Let that whisper in your mind become print on your page.

Finding Purpose and Passion in Blogging

Blogging has been a way for me to discover my passion and purpose. It allows you to explore new topics, reflect on life’s experiences, and connect with others. I never expected how rejuvenating blogging can be, and I believe it will be for you, too.

Taking the first step to start your blog can overwhelm you, but remember that making mistakes is part of the process.

I recommend using Bluehost, which offers dependable service, 24/7 support, and easy setup for beginners. Plus, they have an exclusive offer where you can get started for just $1.99/month!

With a bit of guidance, you can avoid many common pitfalls and find your passion and purpose through blogging. If I can do it, you absolutely can too! Now, lace up those boots, take that first step, and enter the Great Smokey’s
